Dear Ladies and Gentlemen,

You are invited to our next Shenandoah Valley GIS Users Group meeting on
Friday, May 2, 2008. The meeting will be from 8:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at
James Madison University. I will send you more organizational details
about the location, parking, etc. about one week before the meeting.

Last fall we identified 2 topics we wanted to focus on this year. I
think we had a very successful January meeting on "Contracts and GIS
Project Management" and we would like to once again thank the
participants. Our theme for the May meeting is "Data and
Interoperability Standards" and I think we have put together a good
program with VGIN, the FGDC, and ESRI all contributing.

The general outline for the meeting will be:

- A demonstration of one or more applications that could only be
accomplished because standards were utilized
- Defining and explaining different types of standards Semantic
standards, including things like the GNIS and Data Model Standards Data
Formats, including definition for simple features, Domain and defacto
standards Interoperability and IT standards including OGC, WMS, SOA,
etc.
-The Federal Perspective: The FGDC will talk about the standards at the
federal level, including the value of standards the process of creating
standards what standards exist what projects exist that utilize
standards
- The State Perspective: VGIN will talk about standards at the state
level why they are important what standards exist existing projects that
developed &/or utilize standards a vision for the future
- Private Sector Perspective & Technical Briefing: ESRI will "open the
hood" on the demos and talk about specific standards that were required
to make the demos work, and how their products support different types
of standards
- Open Discussion about standards utilization and development in the
Shenandoah Valley

I am looking forward to your input via the forum or via email directly
to me and Dr. James Wilson.

After I have received your feedback, I will send out another email with
more details regarding our meeting. I am looking forward to hearing back
from you.

Sincerely,

Helmut Kraenzle
