Virginia Code § 2.2-2027 specifically states that "all state agencies that maintain GIS databases shall report to [VGIN] the details of the data that they develop, acquire, and maintain. Each agency shall submit quarterly reports to [VGIN] specifying all updates to existing data as well as all data development and acquisition currently in progress. Data exempt from the Virginia Freedom of Information Act (§ 2.2-3700 et seq.) need not be reported to [VGIN]." To help meet the mandate, VGIN recently implemented the new Virginia GIS Metadata portal at http://gisdata.virginia.gov <http://gisdata.virginia.gov/> . This easy-to-use web-based portal facilitates the submission, review, and deployment of Commonwealth GIS metadata. VGIN wants to help state agencies create and submit their metadata to the portal by providing training on general metadata issues and how to use the portal. I will be in touch with the primary GIS contacts from each state agency to schedule training on the use of the metadata portal. After the initial training, VGIN staff will work directly with individual state agencies to help with development and submission of metadata. Having a complete, accurate, and consolidated set of metadata records for the Commonwealth's GIS data has obvious benefits for the citizens, state and local governments, and non-government and private organizations of Virginia. Together, we can create a useful and complete metadata warehouse for Virginia's GIS data; our goal is be done by the end of March 2008.
