We are trying to get a feel for the level of interest in attending this type of training. The specifics of the training are as follows: * What: Two levels of training outlined below. One is a "What is Metadata?" type of training. The second is a hands-on, higher level "retreat" intended for someone with a sound knowledge of metadata basics. * Who: Local governments and state agencies within the Commonwealth. * When: First two weeks in August, 2007. ~7 hours per session. * Where: Currently we are looking at spaces in Hampton, Richmond, Harrisonburg, Blacksburg and Danville. * Fee: Free! (funded by a CAP grant). If you would be interested in attending or have someone in your organization that would attend, please send to me the location that you would prefer and an approximate number of attendees. This DOES NOT register you to attend any specific session. We want to gauge the level of interest so that we can adjust the locations and/or dates of this round of training. Thanks for your input. Lyle **************************************************************** Session 1: Metadata Creator Workshop This workshop is appropriate for introductory to advanced GIS users, and GIS managers/coordinators. The goal of this workshop is to create a cadre of trained metadata creators who can then return to their respective organizations, and provide further metadata training to their peers and co-workers. Through this workshop, participants will work with the Virginia Metadata Standard. Proposed work flows will be provided to encourage participants to institutionalize the creation of metadata within their respective organizations. Instruction will include the following topics: * What is metadata? * Why metadata is important to local / regional / state government entities (and other organizations); * How metadata can be institutionalized throughout organizations; * How to search for archived metadata (includes hands-on activity); * How to interpret and "navigate" through a metadata file (includes hands-on activity); * Examining specific FGDC metadata elements (and identifying information that should be associated with each metadata element in order to generate quality metadata). * Participants will be exposed and instructed using "full-blown" FGDC metadata. The afternoon session will focus on Virginia's approach to metadata. Instruction will include the following topics: * The Virginia Minimum Metadata Standard (FGDC compliant); * Accessing the Virginia Geospatial Metadata Clearinghouse (includes hands-on activity); * Entering metadata records through the Virginia Metadata Clearinghouse's user-friendly metadata entry tool (includes hands-on activity); * Exporting and submitting metadata that has been developed (i.e. through ArcCatalog, etc.) and stored locally to the Virginia Metadata Clearinghouse (includes hands-on activity). Session 2: Metadata Retreat The Metadata Retreat is intended to be a "day away from the office" for participants to focus on the complete lifecycle of metadata records. Participants are asked to bring several of their own production GIS layers to develop metadata files. In the course of developing the metadata records, each attendee will accomplish the following: * Understand the Virginia Minimum Metadata Standard (FGDC compliant) and it's relationship to the full standard; * Gather relevent information about the layer; * Generate metadata using a ArcGIS; * Be exposed to a variety of other metadata tools; * Submit the completed metadata records using ArcGIS and and the built-in editor of the Virginia Metadata Clearinghouse. It is anticipated that participants will complete a minimum of 2 metadata records, from start to finish, by the conclusion of this retreat. The retreat instructors will be available throughout the retreat to answer questions and give guidance. Lyle Lyle Hornbaker Local Government Manager VITA/VGIN 411 E.
