Good Afternoon All

Due to the heavy demand for the Metadata Training classes, we have
scheduled another session. The training is scheduled for Thursday,
February 21 at VITA offices in Chester. This will be the last scheduled
training for the foreseeable future. If Feb 21 is inconvenient or if
travel to Chester, VA is impossible, please let us know. We will try to
meet your metadata training needs with additional classes in Chester or
by bringing the training to you.

The training is free of charge and will consist of a single 7 hour class
covering the following topics. Please email me with the names of all
participants. I will respond with directions to the facility and
specifics about the times.

Morning Session: The morning session will focus on a broad spectrum of
metadata issues, including:

    * What is metadata?
    * Why metadata is important to local/regional/state government
entities (and other organizations);
    * How to search for archived metadata (includes hands-on activity);
    * How to interpret and "navigate" through a metadata file (includes
hands-on activity);
    * Examining specific FGDC metadata elements (and identifying
information that should be associated with each metadata element in
order to generate quality metadata);
    * Participants will be exposed and instructed using "full-blown"
FGDC metadata;
    * The Virginia Minimum Metadata Standard (FGDC compliant);
    * How metadata can be institutionalized throughout organizations.

Afternoon Session: The afternoon session will focus on Virginia's
Metadata Portal. Instruction will include the following topics:

    * Accessing the Virginia Metadata Clearinghouse (includes hands-on
activity);
    * Searching metadata records through the Virginia Metadata
Clearinghouse;
    * Create metadata (participants are requested to bring several
geospatial data files (i.e. shapefile, etc.) with them to the workshop
on CD, flashdrive, etc.;
    * Exporting and submitting (uploading) metadata records that have
been developed (i.e. through ArcCatalog, etc.) and stored locally to the
Virginia Metadata Clearinghouse (includes hands-on activity).
