Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) systems are everyday tools used by E911 dispatch centers throughout the Commonwealth. Over the past few months, there have been several opportunities for discussion of integrating real-time incident information between all levels of government. At the locality level, 911 dispatch centers already have well established methods and procedures for capturing information about ongoing incidents throughout a given locality. As incidents increase in complexity, additional resources and coordination needs begin to enter into the incident. Local Emergency Managers and Incident Commanders begin to build an operational picture of the incident, and begin to coordinate this picture with various other response entities as they are brought into the incident response. Since CAD/E911 systems already contain geospatial information (addresses, coordinates), and since other GIS datasets can support incident response, there seems to be a rather large interest at many levels of government in the integration of such systems. If you or your locality are currently integrating real-time incident information from your CAD/E911 systems, and displaying data feeds of that data through an ESRI or OGC mapping service (internal or external service), could you please contact Brian Crumpler at Brian.Crumpler@vdem.virginia.gov. He is very interested in hearing what people are doing throughout the Commonwealth in this area. Also, if you or your locality are interested in hearing what others are doing in this area, please feel free to email Brian as well.
