		*****CORRECTION ON DATE*****
Please note correction February 22 below. Copy and paste
this instead of the earlier one.

Please pass this information on to your email list
groups. We only have 4 weeks left until the Conference. Pass the Word!

				Greetings from the Virginia Emergency
Management Association:

We are fast approaching the 2008 VEMC
conference at the Hampton Road Convention Center. Lodging is available
next door at the Embassy Suites. We have only one remaining block rate
left. All other block rates are GONE! This is the last and it will end
this Friday (FEBRUARY 22) at $119.00 (Mention VEI Rate).

This conference is a joint partnership
between the Virginia Department of Emergency Management (VDEM) and the
Virginia Emergency Management Association (VEMA).
This year's conference will begin on
Tuesday, March 11, with a preconference event highlighting the latest in
GIS (Geographic Information System) applications. The main conference
will begin on Wednesday, March 12 with keynote speaker Max Mayfield, and
will conclude on Friday, March 14th.
Originally we had the Friday keynote
speaker coming from Somerset PA, Rick Lohr (Flight 93). But he had to
cancel last week.
The conference committee scrambled at the last minute to
find another keynote to close on Friday.

I am pleased to announce the keynote:
Matthew Shenk is from Lancaster PA. Matthew will be
delivering the below information concerning:

The Response to the Amish School Shooting. By
attending this presentation, you will learn how Lancaster County, PA.
responded to the Nickel Mines Amish School Shooting. They will show you
the lessons learned from the event, both in the Communications Center as
well as on the scene, the various responses from all levels of Emergency
Services from the federal level to the local level, the role the media
played in this event, and the special needs that the Amish community had
during this week long event. They will also touch on the emotional
impact on the communications staff and the responders to this
emotionally draining event.

Briefly about Mr. Shenk: Matt Shenk is a
radioroom Supervisor for Lancaster County-wide Communications, in
Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Matt began working for Lancaster County in1984
as a Telecommunicator and has been an Assistant Supervisor or a Primary
Supervisor for the last 20 years. Matt currently holds certifications
as a; Emergency Number Professional, PA State certified 911 Supervisor,
APCO Radioroom Supervisor, Incident Dispatcher, and an Emergency Medical
Dispatcher. Matt is also an instructor for APCO's Active Shooter
course. Matt has an extensive background in fire and EMS and is an
active EMT and volunteer firefighter. Matt is a primary responder for
Lancaster County's Field Communications Unit. Matt was on scene for the
Nickel Mines Amish School Shooting, and a host of other homicide and
other major events in South Central PA., as a responder with the
Communications Unit. Matt lives outside of Manheim, Lancaster County
with his wife Lori and his daughter Sara.

We are very excited about having Mr.
Shenk on our last day. As you know one of the break out sessions during
the week deals with Crisis Management for Schools.
